Carlie Cole, Carlie Cole Frederick Street, Cole Valley, Gold Leaf, Victorians of San francisco

IMG_2805 Carlie’s typical day starts around 6:30am with her glorious trek up Frederick Street for her morning power walk. But one cold, sunny, sarcastic May morning, something out of the ordinary was glaring her in the face! “What’s this!”, she hollered at the pooch, as he lifted his leg to pee then came over to sniff. Carlie peeked between her fingers at the bright brilliant gold globe that was atop the pair of columns at the base of the banisters to a Victorian on Frederick Street. “I LOVE THIS! Just what Cole Valley needs to spiffy up the hood”, she touted, as she continued her long hike up the hill. Maybe others will follow suit. We just have to wait and see.

On an early Sunday sunny spring morning, her arms outstretched and still in bed, Carlie noticed something very, very, very strange. Could she be hallucinating? After assembling her tortoise-rimmed glasses firmly on her face, she wobbled over to her bedroom bay window and looked again at this sighting outside. There, on the pavement, below her building, was a glowing cross coming from somewhere above. Was it beaming down from another galaxy? Are aliens ready to land? “This is creepy, and I am definitely going back to bed hoping that when I awake again, it will be gone! That it will all have been a dream!”, Carlie quivered in a humble whisper. Fast forward two hours later. The cross was still there!

Cole Valley, Maria Callas, San Francisco conures

Carlie is very musical. She is a trained pianist. Not only does she have “perfect pitch”, but loves music of all instruments, man-made or natural. Carlie first heard their chirps when walking through the local park. “Oh my word, what was that sound? Did someone’s pet parrot take flight to the friendly skies of freedom? Hmmm!”. Carlie looked upwards and to her surprise saw several green birds swarming above her. “Wow! It looks like the wild parrots of Telegraph Hill!”, she yelped in amazement. It just so happens the San Francisco’s famed cherry-headed conures, immortalized in a movie and book, have moved westward to Cole Valley. Carlie was so thrilled to have more music added to her new neighborhood, that she ran home, and played a CD of Maria Callas.

Cole Valley, condos, San Francisco

photo-253photo-255photo-257

A San Francisco address is getting to be very pricey. Just ask Carlie. She recently moved here from San Diego a few years ago, where housing prices were high but not crazy!

In her hood, 2 bedroom condos are going for over a million! “Yikes! Well… the kids will have to sleep on the floor when they come to visit!”, Carlie said thinking, and glad that she has a roof over her head.

photo-232photo-235   Poor, poor Carlie! Her SOMA condo had a gym. She loved it. “Why, it was the FIRST time that I actually WENT to a gym. I simply walked down the hall to the elevator, pressed 3 floors down, then trotted out to the gym!”, she sighed with a big old frown. But when Carlie moved to Cole Valley, she found the local gym too expensive. What was she to do to keep fit? Suddenly, a lightbulb went on inside her capricious little head. “Cole Valley has so many hills. And I can put them to good use!”, she smiled so enthusiastically, she got the hiccups. Mapping out the road plan was very simple . “For my morning jalk (a combo of walk and jog) workout, I go up Frederick to Buena Vista Park, make a right turn on Buena Vista West. At Duboce (top of the hill), slide down 3 VERY STEEP blocks, cross the Muni tracks, twirl round Duboce Park (LOVE LOVE watching the doggies play), trace my steps back up Duboce, which I nick-named “The Alps of Cole Valley”, then head home.” Carlie took some wonderful photos from her workout to share with her friends. “My workouts are fun, visually stimulating, and invigorating”, Carlie said, panting, as she gulped down her morning health smoothie!

When Carlie moved to Cole Valley last summer, she noticed a “new opening” on her walk to the pharmacy. The aroma of java attracted her olfactory nerve and she breezed into the balloon infested door of PEET’S Coffee and Tea’s GRAND OPENING on that bright August summer’s day. Carlie was thrilled that PEET’S took over the vacant space formerly housed by Tully’s Coffee. “YAY, YAY and YAY”, she splurted out trying not to let the excitement spill her hot cup o joe! And fairly soon after the opening, the locals were haggling PEET’S to expand further. So it wasn’t surprising that Carlie was pleased to see tables and chairs springing up on the sidewalk outside PEET’S! She snapped this pic of engaging customers enjoying their brews and cellular devices!

Cole Valley, Elmo, Muni

Carlie did something she never thought she would do before moving to Cole Valley. That is, selling her car! “I am NOT going to mess with street parking every day. It’s horrendous around here. And besides, I really could use the cash!”, she exclaimed, while thumbing through her mediocre-filled wallet. She sat on the floor perusing through Next Muni choices on her smart phone. “Wow-y, wow-y. Look at all the routes that are within a thumbs reach!”, she shouted to herself. The mainline she was excited about was the N-Judah going downtown. So Carlie zipped on her khaki jacket and raced out the door towards Carl and Cole Streets, where the N stop stood. No sooner did she step up from the curb, swirled around with flying arms, excited to make a trip downtown, when she flicked her head upward and glanced at the 2nd floor of a corner building. Her eyes nearly popped out into the street. “OMG, IT’S ELMO!! I LOVE IT”, Carlie screamed. She has an affinity for soft, furry, cuddly things, and seeing this amused her. Upon future trips on the N downtown, she noticed Elmo dressed in funny attire, or wearing shades, or standing on his head! “THIS is why I moved to Cole Valley. A place with a sense of humor, is a place for Carlie Cole!”.

Carlie may have left the hustle and bustle of downtown San Francisco last summer, but her new life in Cole Valley has been full of nice surprises and influences of the French kind. The evenings here in Cole Valley can get quite foggy and breezy. On a recent stroll up Cole, Carlie’s brown beret (purchased last year in her favorite part of Paris-the Marais) flew off her head and landed near an iron-gated entry to a flat. After retrieving her beret, her eyes focused on the upper section of the gate. To her surprise, the design had incorporated one of Carlie’s favorite symbol…the fleur-du-lys! “Oui Oui, ce qui est beau!!”, she shouted in her fractured French, and drew quite a bit of attention from passersby before managing to snap this photo.

Carlie thought how fantastic it would be to capture more French iconography and compile them into a pictorial book. Her smile was as wide as the Seine!

Cole Valley, Haight

photo-224

Carlie Cole was hopping off the N Judah on her way home from downtown on a sunny, risky day when she noticed something quite different. Her usual route home (after much research in finding the quickest and least hilliest walk) was through Cole Valley’s adorable little park on Carl St. between Clayton and Cole. So as she huddled up the path from the park to the concrete steps leading to Clayton St., a tuxedoed little penguin greeted her. Well he didn’t communicate much because someone painted this creature on the side of the steps as a memorial to a penguin named Arnold. It was nicely painted by Finch. Was Arnold his little pet? Carlie was quite puzzled by this unusual sighting in her hood. She immediately raced up the concrete park steps, rushed down the block to her pad, and watched the flick, HAPPY FEET, wearing her new brown, cozy Uggs!

blogaliscious, Cole Valley, Haight, selfie, Sutro Tower

photo-223

Well. Let’s start from the beginning. I (Carlie Cole) moved into an Edwardian condo on Frederick Street. Yes, it is a far cry from my old SOMA hood in the heart of things in downtown S.F. But where could I get this FABULOUS view of SUTRO TOWER (a 977 ft. three-pronged antenna tower rising from a hill between Twin Peaks and Mount Sutro)?? ONLY from my bedroom window! Heck, it’s just a very prominent part of the SF skyline and a landmark for residents and visitors of the fabulous city!

Carlie was so stoked about it that she ripped off the blinds from her bay window, threw them in the trash, then celebrated with a tall glass of Anchor Steam beer! “When in SF, do as the locals!” Carlie exclaimed, and skipped down the block towards Haight Street with her brew in hand!
