“What is wrong with this picture?” queried Carlie, as she skirted home crossing Carl Street one curly evening. Carlie looked up at her friend’s bizarre and lost expression. She knocked on his door and ran up the stairs to talk to her cuddly big-eyed red friend, Elmo.

“How many Republican presidential candidates can this crazy country keep piling on?!”, exclaimed Elmo, his eyes rolling like a slot machine! “I’m fed up, and honestly, I’m stumped, trumped AND I need to borrow a piece of Trump’s hair!”

Carlie laughed loudly, and hugged her friend goodbye.

Carlie loves to read! Her latest undertaking is reading all of Vladimir Nabokov’s novels. Her favorite is Lolita followed closely by Speak Memory. “But what oh what to read after this crazy obsession?”, as Carlie clambered up Carl Street towards the Sunset. In the distance, she noticed a tall towering yellow bookcase. “Oh, don’t tell me. Not another garage sale!”, Carlie exclaimed as she shook her glasses off. But when she got closer and within arms length of this “Big Bird”, she saw shelves of books in all different colors and sizes with not a person in sight!

Then the sign. It read, “Carl Street Free Library” in LARGE print, followed by “No Fees. No Dues. No Cash Required.” “WHOOPEE”, shouted Carlie.”I have discovered a tremendous treasure for book worms like me!”, as she grabbed a couple of interesting novels and slithered the rest of the way home!

Carlie Cole, Carlie Cole Frederick Street, Cole Valley, Gold Leaf, Victorians of San francisco

IMG_2805 Carlie’s typical day starts around 6:30am with her glorious trek up Frederick Street for her morning power walk. But one cold, sunny, sarcastic May morning, something out of the ordinary was glaring her in the face! “What’s this!”, she hollered at the pooch, as he lifted his leg to pee then came over to sniff. Carlie peeked between her fingers at the bright brilliant gold globe that was atop the pair of columns at the base of the banisters to a Victorian on Frederick Street. “I LOVE THIS! Just what Cole Valley needs to spiffy up the hood”, she touted, as she continued her long hike up the hill. Maybe others will follow suit. We just have to wait and see.

Yes, there is a happy ending to the mysterious and sometime blogger of Cole Valley, Carlie Cole. Her boyfriend of two and a half years proposed to her last summer of 2014, and they were married on Sept. 5, 2014 at City Hall. It was a warm almost fall day and the bright sun shone on Carlie’s pearl and tulle headpiece. She skipped up and down the hilly Frederick Street humming the familiar wedding tune. The slight wind sparkled her face as a smile filtered through. It was time, she thought, and gathered up her two proud sons. They happily sped off in a black limousine from her familiar Cole Valley street to pick up the handsome groom at his office.

Well, the wedding was fabulous, serene and saucy, which says much about Carlie. She’s back into the swing of things, and hopefully will blog more. Yes, let’s hope so. There are very interesting ideas rumbling through Carlie’s head and if you stay tuned, you will not miss a beat.

Carlie Cole, Haight Street, Poetry

photo-312

Carlie is tickled to find out that her new Frederick Street address is only 2 blocks from the exciting, amusing, hippiedom of San Francisco. “Where do all the flippies meet…Haight Street, Haight Street”, Carlie sang on her usual walking tour of this colorful street. On a buzzed evening, just before sundown, she was near approaching Haight Street Market to pick up some sundries when she stopped dead in her tracks by a man in black reciting words. “Wow! A poet! Wouldn’t ya know it!”, Carlie laughed to herself. She stood in front of the talking man and listened intently. His name is Don Eli, a glorified poet and local resident. He continued his recitation….   EMPIRE OF WINNERS AND LOSERS……

“We can’t think of everything at once. With limited time to spend and attention to pay. The never-ending cost of getting ahead or just getting through the day. In the empire of winners and losers, where our minds are focused on winning, or simply surviving losing. Too busy for wondering or imagining, any other way”

Carlie thanked him for his words and decided to pick up a copy of his poetry collection, “Vivian Gardens, 2012”. Don smiled courageously and waved a hand goodbye.

PINBALL AMUSEMENT ON WALLER

Carlie was minding her own business when she skipped down Waller Street on her way to a walk in the park. She bumped right into a standup sign on the sidewalk. “What on earth does F*G*W mean??”, Carlie said to a nearby squirrel scurrying up the tree. Since he couldn’t give her the answer, she walked into the open doorway. “PINBALL MACHINES!! YIKES! And just around the corner from my house!”, she exclaimed wanting to play every single one. Carlie went over to the owner and asked how this all started and what did those strange 3 letters mean anyways? The space began in 2006 as a simple silk screen print shop at 1767 Waller, but they always felt the space was poorly used. With a long virtually idle hallway that served as a showroom leading to their workshop, they started adding some pinball machines. The response was so very positive that the shop started adding more. With 20 pinball machines and other arcade games, it’s a virtual fun house! “I am definitely coming back with change in my hand to play these beauties”, said Carlie, and darted out the door. Those strange 3 letters? Free Gold Watch! Go figure!

Cole Valley

On an early Sunday sunny spring morning, her arms outstretched and still in bed, Carlie noticed something very, very, very strange. Could she be hallucinating? After assembling her tortoise-rimmed glasses firmly on her face, she wobbled over to her bedroom bay window and looked again at this sighting outside. There, on the pavement, below her building, was a glowing cross coming from somewhere above. Was it beaming down from another galaxy? Are aliens ready to land? “This is creepy, and I am definitely going back to bed hoping that when I awake again, it will be gone! That it will all have been a dream!”, Carlie quivered in a humble whisper. Fast forward two hours later. The cross was still there!

Cole Valley, Maria Callas, San Francisco conures

photo-296

Carlie is very musical. She is a trained pianist. Not only does she have “perfect pitch”, but loves music of all instruments, man-made or natural. Carlie first heard their chirps when walking through the local park. “Oh my word, what was that sound? Did someone’s pet parrot take flight to the friendly skies of freedom? Hmmm!”. Carlie looked upwards and to her surprise saw several green birds swarming above her. “Wow! It looks like the wild parrots of Telegraph Hill!”, she yelped in amazement. It just so happens the San Francisco’s famed cherry-headed conures, immortalized in a movie and book, have moved westward to Cole Valley. Carlie was so thrilled to have more music added to her new neighborhood, that she ran home, and played a CD of Maria Callas.

Cole Valley, condos, San Francisco

photo-253photo-255photo-257

A San Francisco address is getting to be very pricey. Just ask Carlie. She recently moved here from San Diego a few years ago, where housing prices were high but not crazy!

In her hood, 2 bedroom condos are going for over a million! “Yikes! Well… the kids will have to sleep on the floor when they come to visit!”, Carlie said thinking, and glad that she has a roof over her head.

photo-232photo-235   Poor, poor Carlie! Her SOMA condo had a gym. She loved it. “Why, it was the FIRST time that I actually WENT to a gym. I simply walked down the hall to the elevator, pressed 3 floors down, then trotted out to the gym!”, she sighed with a big old frown. But when Carlie moved to Cole Valley, she found the local gym too expensive. What was she to do to keep fit? Suddenly, a lightbulb went on inside her capricious little head. “Cole Valley has so many hills. And I can put them to good use!”, she smiled so enthusiastically, she got the hiccups. Mapping out the road plan was very simple . “For my morning jalk (a combo of walk and jog) workout, I go up Frederick to Buena Vista Park, make a right turn on Buena Vista West. At Duboce (top of the hill), slide down 3 VERY STEEP blocks, cross the Muni tracks, twirl round Duboce Park (LOVE LOVE watching the doggies play), trace my steps back up Duboce, which I nick-named “The Alps of Cole Valley”, then head home.” Carlie took some wonderful photos from her workout to share with her friends. “My workouts are fun, visually stimulating, and invigorating”, Carlie said, panting, as she gulped down her morning health smoothie!
